I come in search of ideas.  Last week the best friend of a very good friend of mine committed suicide.  She is devastated and I just want to take care of her.  My main way to show my love to people is to cook for them, and in a situation like this where there are no words this is the best that I have ( Read more... )

sorry about your friend's loss. i totally understand about wanting to help, and food being an easy way to do so. not knowing what your friend's comfort foods are makes menu planning a challenge though!

what's the weather like where you are? if it's cooling off, i would aim for a hearty soup or stew: minestrone, cataplana, or maybe even a seitan bourgignon. accompanied with some olives and bread or a sammich or salad, it can be quite versatile and easily frozen.

if it's hot, a nice gazspacho goes a long way, especially with vegan breadsticks, and garnished with chunks of avocado and cucumber and/or fresh cilantro.

best of luck, and strength to you and yours during this time.

What kind of foods does your friend consider comforting? The vegancooking community pages are searchable by ingredient, ethnic cuisine, and manner of preparation or meal order (casserole, desserts, pies, special occasion, etc.). The community splash page has all the categories laid out on the right hand side for easy navigation, and contributors are encouraged to cross-reference with tags (ie. Lenten spanakopita may be tagged as: ethnic-greek, spinach, pie, main dish, holiday food-easter). There's also an older, pre-tag archive, accessible from the options at the top of the page.

Most posts will have a discussion attached, in which issues like, "can it be frozen?" "how many does it serve?" "can it be made without [insert dreaded foodstuff here]?", etc.

Your friend is lucky to have such good support at such an awful time.
