Figs

My neighbors have a couple of giant fig trees and they're letting me pick them while they're on a week long vacation.  There are sooooo many figs! I've been eating them fresh, yum!, making fig smoothies, I'm making 'fig newtons' later today, but there's still more figs!  I looked through the tags, but didn't find much (other than suggestions to ( Read more... )

Oh man, I planted two fig trees last year and I cannot wait until they start fruiting! I've been collecting recipes/ideas for them.

- If you have a dehydrator, dry them!
- They're great in muffins/pies or galettes/cakes, fresh or dried.
- I made this recipe subbing figs for the pluots- the fig and anise were lovely together.
- Many people grill figs, though I've never personally tried this.
- Figs also make a lovely jam. If you don't have canning equipment, you can always make freezer jam.

If you google vegan fig recipes, you'll find all sorts of enticing salads and baked goods, like this (the fig tomato salad at the bottom is intriguing to me), and this (includes savory fig recipes).

Happy eating!

everything she said. I was mostly going to mention the canning bit.

Also, there is dehydrating them and using them later.

I saw a dandy advert for a fig pizza this weekend -- Very very ritzy.

dry them& put them in a jar with vodka - very tasty on icecream or pancakes.

I am trying to imagine too many figs, I really can't! I am a fan of figs in salad with a sweet and sour type dressing.

Do you ferment it? I'd imagine then it'd be like a fig version of limoncello.

ferment as in carbohydrate oxydation? nah. quite the opposite. you may want to sterilize the jar/flask/whatever you're using before you put in the figs and the alcohol.

alcohol kills yeast and most bacteria quite efficiently - but only in places it actually touches (caps, lids? not necessarily!).

basically you're making cordial with just two components - difference is that the *dried* figs will retain much more of their flavor in the long run.

I edited this comment out because I thought this was cooking, not vegancooking, and what I suggested was decidedly not vegan!

LOL, thanks for the reminder because the 1st thing that popped in my mind was not vegan at all either!! And I also thought this was a cooking post and not a vegancooking post...oops

When I was a kid my gdmother made a wonderful jam with figs, vanilla pods and walnuts in it. One of my best childhood memory... :-P
Some sorts of jams or chutneys seem like the way to go if you have a lot and want to keep them for later... I hear figs and onions marmalade is delish... :-)
