Any tips for a good Tofurky Roast?

Nov 24, 2008 08:05

This is our first Thanksgiving since going vegan (almost a year!) and despite very mixed reviews my husband and I decided to try a Tofurky Roast. I've heard that it is rather salty so I plan on adding a tbsp of maple syrup to the olive oil, soy sauce and sage baste. I'm also wondering if maybe I should go with a low sodium soy sauce... I'm ( Read more... )

The original Tofurkey baste recipe on the box was a mixture of orange juice, maple syrup, soy sauce and olive oil. I like it better than the new one and still use that one instead. It adds just the right amount of sweet and sour.

Other than that...wrap the Tofurkey in foil and baste often as the package says and you really can't fail. I actually once had a Tofurkey that was not basted or anything, just roasted in the oven, and it was still a good meal.

I use the orange juice mix, too, though I have also used apple cider in place of orange juice. Very tasty!

I think the original orange juice mixture was actually orange juice, soy sauce, and brown sugar only. That's what I use. :)

Did you just use regular soy sauce or reduced sodium? Thanks!

Regular, though I think once I've used Bragg's liquid aminos in place of soy sauce. :)

Someone "open sourced" the Unturkey recipe after the company went out of business, here is the website: http://unturkey.org/ mmmmmmmmm. Unturkey was sooo much better than Tofurky. You may have already gotten your Tofurky for the year, so you could use the recipe for Christmas instead!

I thought Unturkey tasted like windex! It's funny how people have totally different tastes like that because I love Tofurky.

I baste mine with apricot jam, sesame oil, tamari, and garlic, every 15 minutes.

!!! I just came on here to try to find out in what entry someone suggested this last year. This is what I used (with some variation) and it was great. Thanks!

I really like tofurkey - we always roast it in a big covered dish with potatoes, carrots and yams - the only thing I would add to the instructions is to turn it a bit when you baste - it tends to get a bit chewy at the bottom otherwise (which I actually find pretty tasty, but it's hard to cut neatly)

I'm going to marinate mine in sparkling apple juice, olive oil, garlic and herbs.

But, I usually make the soy sauce, olive oil, sage mixture for it. I also cover the whole roast with Earth Balance, because I like a brown crust on it, but still moist on the inside. Just make sure to baste it a lot, about every 15 minutes, like someone else said. It's delicious!

How much of everything are you going to use? This sounds like a delicious combination! =)

I did almost a whole bottle of sparkling cider, there was just like a drink or two left. Then I used a whole head of garlic, because I love garlic. And then I chopped up two fresh sage leaves, 2 sprigs of rosemary and 2 sprigs of thyme. Then I just whisked in a couple tablespoons of olive oil, until I thought it looked good. Then added some salt and fresh ground pepper. It smelled delicious!
