My mom is flying into town Monday night and I would like to make pizza for her. She's not vegan but in the past, has eaten vegan food and enjoyed it. I don't know how much vegan food she can tolerate before she starts asking "where's the meat" so I need a recipe that is tried and true omnivore approvedFor the crust I'm looking for something that is ( Read more... )

I'm sorry I don't have a recipe for the crust, but I was thinking about the toppings. If your mom is open to vegan food, but only to a certain point, I would not recommend trying to use fake cheese on the pizza. Sometimes people associate certain food items with a certain taste, and pizza is one of those foods that people think they "know what it should taste like."
I propose that you top it with a really fantastic and flavorful sauce, chock full with garlic and basil and fresh roasted tomatoes, and then roast some vegetables in olive oil (red onions, zucchini, more garlic, red/yellow/orange peppers) to top it all off with.
You could also use pesto and top it with tomatoes, roasted garlic, olives, and broccoli.
Good luck!

i definitely agree with not using fake cheese, the best vegan pizzas i've ever had have all been good quality sauce and toppings. one i just had at a great restaurant was spinach, basil, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, and vegan sausage (which you could also omit), and was nearly perfect.

A few dough recipes were just posted in cooking. By nature, most pizza dough is vegan (there's one recipe with sugar/honey in it, but it's not traditional dough).

Amy's makes a vegan pizza. Honest it is very good. Now I am not saying to use that but you can look at the ingredients on their web site and get some ideas from something that works. This is a link to the site and notice with the icons there are two vegan pizzas. http://www.amyskitchen.com/products/category_view.php?prod_category=3 The reason I do not eat them anymore is because of the fat content and sodium. Good luck.

oh, i like that. i think i'm going to change the tag from "foods that non-vegans would like" to "omnivore approved foods" it's catchier and probably easier to find.

I don't have a dough recipe, but my all time favorite pizza is one with just a little bit of olive oil, crushed tomatoes, and roasted eggplant. Delicious!
