Grain mill!

Jan 11, 2007 19:09

After years of threatening to do so, I've bought a grain mill. I got a Family Grain Mill from Pleasant Hill Grain. Currently, when you buy the mill with the motorized base they throw in the hand-crank base for free. It arrived today, so tonight I tried the hand-crank base.

THIS IS AMAZING! I really want to get one of these. I'll have to save up though... do you feel like paying the extra $100+ for the motor base is worth it? It sounds like the hand grinder works pretty well, but after a while you might get tired of grinding.. what do you think?

Thank you so much for posting this!

Well, it depends, of course, on you and your inclinations. But I will say this--I was actually all set to buy a different mill that was hand-crank only, and having ground a measly cup or so of flour with this thing, I'm awfully glad I have the motor option ( ... )

It sounds like the motor would be worth the extra money. Thanks for all the information! I am pretty excited about this contraption being a part of my life at some point. So neat!

I admit I wasn't sure how it was intended at first, so I was a little wary. But I've seen so many silly battles that could have been avoided by assuming the best, so I just figured that was the best route. Sure enough, all in good fun--no hurt feelings required!

My family has had Bosch mills forever. It makes the best bread (and it only takes one time through to get fine flour). I'm still hunting for an organic whole grain wheat supplier though. It seems very difficult to find.

Hmm. In Springfield that could be difficult (I grew up in Loudoun County). There's no Whole Foods within reach? Or a little health food store that would order a 25-lb. sack for you if you requested it?

Technically I'm in Burke but Livejournal is stupd and keeps changing it to Springfield. I honestly never thought to look for whole wheat at whole foods because... well they don't even stock organic flour let alone wheat. Most of the smaller health food stores here have closed or turned into vitamin stores so I don't have much hope there. We used to get giant buckets of wheat through the lady that sold our mill but somehow I doubt her supplier has gone organic. I've been looking around the internet but mostly the listings are for wholesalers who don't just sell to the public.

There's a Whole Foods that doesn't stock organic flour?? What?! The same Whole Foods that bills itself as the "world's leading natural and organic foods supermarket"? That seems very, very strange.

Good luck!
