After years of threatening to do so, I've bought a grain mill. I got a
Family Grain Mill from
Pleasant Hill Grain. Currently, when you buy the mill with the motorized base they throw in the hand-crank base for free. It arrived today, so tonight I tried the hand-crank base.
First I bought organic hard red wheat at the co-op for 59 cents a pound.
For the sake of a first run, I weighed out 100g of wheat berries.
Into the hopper! Obviously, it's designed for batches of much more than 100g at a time.
After the first run! To get really fine flour you need to send it through twice, but the second time goes very fast. With this lighting I couldn't take a photo that would show you the difference in texture between first and second run, as it does the vast majority of the work the first time through. The dial lets you adjust coarseness, so you can do anything from cracked grain to coarse flour to fine flour.
Homemade flour! Brimming with nutrients and with flavor that will make you wonder why you've been eating pre-milled flour for so long.
