Dear Steve,

You've been owned by another botique manufacturer. Not only is it thinner, but it also has answers to all the complaints people have about the Air, some of which are answered in an extremely clever way (the point-to-point Wi-Fi, for example ( Read more... )

New from HP for 2010: the Saltine XF Notebook! So thin, you'll think it's a party snack!
Available in Original, Zesty Ranch, and Cheddar colors.

I think there are plenty of Unix geeks out there who might disagree with you.

Maybe so, but I'd just point out the Cheeto crumbs in their neck beards.

I really do.
But I've noticed that my brain seems to stroke off intermittently. I can be in the middle of saying something or writing something and it'll just...stop. In talking with my therapist, it seems like it's probably part of the migraine, where my language center (and sometimes the part responsible for processing the speech of others) will just flip out and stop working right. I've spent twenty seconds staring at an object and not being able to remember what it's called. That interferes some with my ability to express myself, and is really high on the list of things I'll be mentioning at MHNI.
Also, sometimes I lose my z axis. Everything goes from looking three-dimensional to looking like a flat representation of three dimensions, like a video game. And there's this delay, where I feel like I'm seeing someone's lips move a half-second after they've actually said something. I think I may be on the road to brain damage.

It must have some merit, given the amount of vitriol spewed by naysayers.

Ribbing aside, you're not part of the Mac's intended audience. So, all I can say is, enjoy whatever makes you happy.

I'm really not. I'm a propellerhead and they target the "just make it work" set, which is a pretty big segment of society.

That's a broad generalization, considering the Mac is a popular platform for geeks. I'm a "propellerhead" myself, and I much prefer the Mac because it lets me get my work done. I'm also a big Unix/Linux fan.

I didn't express myself properly up there, and I've been trying off and on for a couple days to come up with a clear, concise way of saying what I mean to. It's not going well.

But I think what I was trying to get across is that some people out there just love to rip stuff apart, see how it works, and then try to put it back together themselves. Some people like building something with their own two hands. Macs are not targeted at those people, because you can't build your own Mac and if Steve had his way (like he did on the Lesa) you wouldn't be able to even crack the case without a special alen wrench.

You've gotten crankier in the past year or so.
If you don't mind me asking, what griped you enough to write this post?

BTW, I completely agreed that the MacBook Air is overpriced crap. There are technologies in it that would be better on the MacBooks and MacBook Pros (extra multi-touch functionality on the touchpad and LED backlit display). Considering it has crap for storage, internal or removable, it should have been priced at about 1/5 the cost. I could see it being sold for $400 or less and it being Apple's entry into the slim and portable notebook category. Like you, I'm not in the niche to buy one as I cannot justify spending that much money on a glorified thin client. Seriously, you can edit Word docs and surf the web...I can do that on my MacBook and more.

Also, now that I have a 320GB HDD, I'm going to load XP on here. But first, I have to burn off 150GB of Doctor Who for Kim. I have all of the seasons of the first five Doctors.

I really am a curmudgeon. I don't think it was anything other than the fact that Steve Jobs clings so tenaciously to marketing gimmicks like "the thinnest notebook ever" and some evil part of me just likes seeing him get his come-uppence in some tiny way. That plus all this fawning over the 3G iPhone where nobody mentions the down sides in the articles; it takes people like Tom & Molly or Leo & Dvorak to mention that there are problems and it's not Jesus with a cellular antenna.

But mostly, I think it's a combination of me coming across crankier than I really was and being too much of a curmudgeon for my own good.
