Five crushes meme

Feb 04, 2005 10:24

I really like the "five crushes you had as a child/teenager" meme, if only as an excuse to dredge up some fond yet embarrassing memories.

  1. Aragorn. I've had this crush since I was seven. It comes and goes, but I see no reason to give it up.
  2. Dr. McCoy. Even then, I liked the secondary characters. McCoy had some interesting stuff going on.
  3. Luke ( Read more... )

I had crushes on both Napoleon and Ilya. And, oddly enough, on Richard Basehart's character in the TV version of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. (The admiral, not the captain, for some reason.) My best friend had a crush on Chip in that show. We used to make up stories about them and perform them for each other in our little fan club. We also had UNCLE cards in little card cases as well. We emptied out contac capsules and put messages in them we wrote on unrolled lollipop sticks.

And, though I am embarrassed to admit it, I loved Rat Patrol, but had my crush on the German rather than the Americans. I guess that was my first flirtation with ambivalent bad boys.

As for books, well I had a crush on Mr. Darcy, but who doesn't? And on Prince Andre in War and Peace. And on Sidney Carton, who went to a far better place than he has ever known

When I look back, the trajectory of my life seems inevitable. And yet I was surprised at every turn!

A. You clearly read much more good literature as a child or early teenager than I did. I don't think I knew who Prince Andre was until I was in college.

B. Some part of me vaguely regrets never having seen Man From UNCLE.

C. Time to bite the bullet, Camille. You really should just go ahead and join us in the Dark Side on livejournal. It's not all teenyboppers--there are plenty of old timers like you and me floating around. There's also a large contingent of published fantasy and science fiction authors, although they are beyond my orbit--coffe_and_ink, who commented below, seems to know them all. There are also a lot of people working out of livejournal doing academic work on fandom, which I know is not your thing any more, but really, you so belong here. You can keep your journal friends-locked if you don't want random people to stalk you.

And really, it's not that big a waste of time.

Oh, my dear. You haven't lived until you've seen David McCallum in his prime, dangling by his wrists from an overhead steam pipe.

I still get a little sniffly when I think of the exchange between him ad Lew at the end of The Heritage of Hastur.

Ah yes, Regis. He wasn't a crush, but I definitely had the urge to hug him, in a distincly big sister way, though.

And, err, I...was fascinated by Dyan Ardais in both Heritage of Hastur and Sharra's Exile.

(*Looks at Sloane. Looks at Bester. Is no longer surprised.*)

Heh. Bester was one of my favorite characters on Babylon 5 (along with Vir, Susan and Talia. How I miss that show.)

Ah, the nostalgia.

But you forgot Arilan! :)

You know, it's funny. As I wrote the list, I was thinking, you know, I'm sure there was someone from the Deryni books. Was it Kelson? No, that doesn't sound right... oh well, never mind. Which I think means that there are places in my pre-teen psyche that my conscious mind dares not go. Or that I only did that to keep you company.

I have got to find a source for the Darkover books. I was all down with the Free Amazons when I read them and kind of didn't notice the guys much, but it would be fun to revisit and take, uh, stock.

My crush on Lt. Castillo was the love that dare not speak its name when Miami Vice was airing. I never mentioned it because I knew nobody would understand. Also, I loved Control on The Equalizer. Hmm.

My lust for Shang Tsung, the villain in Mortal Kombat, was really quite intense there for a bit. But that was purely physical.

I see The Heritage of Hastur around in used bookstores often enough. I actually preferred the books about Lew and Regis to the Free Amazons books, which became vaguely tedious after a while.

Ah, Lt. Castillo. Yes, he was clearly the best thing about that show.

I wonder if The Reluctant King (apparently in progress when MZB died; still hanging out on her official site as to-be-published) will be focused on Regis. It's supposed to be a continuation of Heritage and Sharra's Exile.

I couldn't mention Lt. Castillo as a crush, because I was well grown up by then, and knew what I was doing. Just as I didn't discover Tolkein until I was in college the first time, in that great burst of being a hippy. I can't consider Aragorn a crush, though, since that relationship has lasted for decades,

PS: I have often considered starting a live journal, but can't seem to push myself up yet another learning curve to set one up. And then there is the fear, always the fear, that I will throw this lovely online party and no one will show up.

I liked Luke best at first too! All in white with windswept hair and the teenage angst. In my defense, I was only thirteen. Like Leia, I woke up to Han's charms in the second movie.

This is a fun meme. I think I'll go do it now. :)
