Five crushes meme

I really like the "five crushes you had as a child/teenager" meme, if only as an excuse to dredge up some fond yet embarrassing memories.

  1. Aragorn. I've had this crush since I was seven. It comes and goes, but I see no reason to give it up.
  2. Dr. McCoy. Even then, I liked the secondary characters. McCoy had some interesting stuff going on.
  3. Luke ( Read more... )

I have got to find a source for the Darkover books. I was all down with the Free Amazons when I read them and kind of didn't notice the guys much, but it would be fun to revisit and take, uh, stock.

My crush on Lt. Castillo was the love that dare not speak its name when Miami Vice was airing. I never mentioned it because I knew nobody would understand. Also, I loved Control on The Equalizer. Hmm.

My lust for Shang Tsung, the villain in Mortal Kombat, was really quite intense there for a bit. But that was purely physical.

I see The Heritage of Hastur around in used bookstores often enough. I actually preferred the books about Lew and Regis to the Free Amazons books, which became vaguely tedious after a while.

Ah, Lt. Castillo. Yes, he was clearly the best thing about that show.

I wonder if The Reluctant King (apparently in progress when MZB died; still hanging out on her official site as to-be-published) will be focused on Regis. It's supposed to be a continuation of Heritage and Sharra's Exile.

I couldn't mention Lt. Castillo as a crush, because I was well grown up by then, and knew what I was doing. Just as I didn't discover Tolkein until I was in college the first time, in that great burst of being a hippy. I can't consider Aragorn a crush, though, since that relationship has lasted for decades,

PS: I have often considered starting a live journal, but can't seem to push myself up yet another learning curve to set one up. And then there is the fear, always the fear, that I will throw this lovely online party and no one will show up.

Would you mind if I let people know that you're here? There are at least a few from RATales who will remember you from there, and I know of at least two of my other friends who'd be interested.

Oh, dear. I skipped over "child/teenager" part of the meme. Lt. Castillo doesn't count, then, although even then I still didn't know what I was doing, fannishly speaking.

If you're in the US, they're currently re-releasing the older parts of the Darkover series as omnibus novels (two/three novels to a paperback). They even recently re-released The Planet Savers and The World Wreckers, two of the Darkover novels that hadn't seen the light of day in decades.

The prices on the omnibus novel paperbacks are either $7.99 or $8.99. You could probably get the whole series for fairly inexpensively.

Ah, I'm bored. In world chronological order (implied order in the history of the universe):
Darkover: First Contact (Darkover Landfall/Two To Conquer)
The Ages of Chaos: Stormqueen/Hawkmistress
The Saga of the Renunciates (The Shattered Chain/Thendara House/City of Sorcery)
A World Divided: Star of Danger/The Bloody Sun/The Winds of Darkover
The Forbidden Circle (The Spell Sword and The Forbidden Tower)
To Save a World (Planet Savers and The World Wreckers)
Heritage and Exile (The Heritage of Hastur/Sharra's Exile)

The omnibuses appear to be missing (of the earlier novels) The Heirs of Hammerfell and Rediscovery ( ... )
