That is the awesomest thing I've ever seen! Some years ago I did a presentation on New Zealand and used their old safety video which was about the LotR trilogy...glad they did it again :D
It's such a mixture of things that don't seem to go together AT ALL. And yet, strangely, they do. :) My regards to Lord S., and it was a pleasure to post this. :)
You know, for all the kvetching I do about The Hobbit movies (and I could do so. damned. much....), I'm not really against their existing as a basic thing. I mean, it was the original trilogy that brought me to Tolkien so it's exposing people ten years behind me and that seems good. Plus stuff like this. So while I think they're Bad with a capital B, they bring a focus and an attention that gives us stuff like this.
And this really is brilliant, you know. So it doesn't make the movies okay, but it's really kind of awesome on its own.
I realise my opinion about the Hobbit movies will always be a minority vote, but I wish they did not exist, not as a basic thing, not ever. Exactly in the same way that I wish Star Trek Reboot was never made. (Sorry all you ST Reboot fans out there.) I doubt many people are brought to Tolkien by the Hobbit movies, and if they come to the Hobbit, they cannot but be disappointed. It's a children's book, and the movies are adult action movies. What worked with the LotR movies so awesomely, with much better adaptations of the books, too, was that people get an inkling of what Tolkien is all about from the movies, and then could plunge into the book to find more and a different take on similar themes. I cannot imagine this working for anyone who only knows the Hobbit.
But, but, yes, all the popular culture stuff around the movies is awesome. And I am convinced there is some great Bilbo/Thorin fic out there even when I will not touch it with a ten foot pole. ;)

If only it would not take sooooo long (I thought the 14 hours to Japan would never come to an end.... and this would be even longer....).
