Pure-blood: Magbobs, Pure-Blood Directory, Sacred Twenty-eight, fear or dislike of pigs as sign of pure-bloodness, Cantankterus Nott, Prof Mordicus Egg
I found it really interesting that the Shacklebolts were listed on there. Kills the belief that Kingsley was a Half-blood or Muggle-born (which seems to crop up in a lot of fics about him). Also wonder if we'll ever meet/hear about a Fawley or a Shafiq. We've been told or introduced to at least one of all the other 26 families.
It is fascinating. I love how we get historical background information from Pottermore.
You think it's a European thing? Rowling clearly modelled the HP blood-racism on the Nazi racist ideology. But is the Ku-Klux-Klan any different? Or the Aryan Nations? Or Japanese believing in the superiority of the Yamato race?
The thinking and beliefs of the Ku Klux Klan and Aryan Nations are really anomalous to mainstream America. These groups were/are are considered whacko fringe groups in the United States whereas in Japan, Britain, and Europe the notion of class and purity are much more institutionalized. I think it has begun to disappear for the most part, but there are certainly large pockets of it to be found. And allow me to say now that this comment is not meant to be deprecating, but rather a simple observation.
Hm. I have to disagree. (And please don't worry, we know each other well enough to have an exchange about this. But I need to defend my European heritage here. :)). When D.W. Griffith's racist movie about the emergence of the KKK, The Birth of Nation, came out in 1914, there was controversy, yes, but the movie was also a huge commercial success. Also, for the whole of American history, I don't think anyone can claim that racist beliefs are an anomaly. In fact, many historians today would claim that the very fundaments of American culture are based on racist beliefs in the superiority of white Christian people over the native populations and African-Americans. White Americans, for a long time, really have been European at heart, and share all the common racist prejudices. There is a very strong anti-racist discourse today in the US, especially in intellectual circles - a discourse I very much appreciate and wish Europe would learn from. But racism and the concern with keeping the country "100% American" (which is nothing else but
( ... )
I think it means the Potters are not "pure-blood", meaning they always intermarried with Muggles and Muggleborns. It doesn't necessarily mean that they were in fact a pure-blood family but didn't want to be associated with such a racist classification. In the text it says that some families on the list did that (like the Weasleys), but they still were part of the list.
