15. Wedding (3 of 100)vavarnerJune 3 2011, 03:35:43 UTC
When Jay and Kitty get married, Cam's the best man. Paul is one of the groomsmen. Val's not in the wedding party because his band is playing the reception. It's a real honor. Not Your Daddies all dressed up in their zoots and hats, a carnation boutonnière in every lapel.
Yet when he sees the bride and groom dance slow and close, Val feels a twinge. He's never going to be a groom. Never gonna marry.
He hides his melancholy with a bright smile, a tip of his hat. Makes the next number jump, plays Lucky Fedora to the hilt.
47. Mosquito (4 of 100)vavarnerJune 3 2011, 06:09:17 UTC
A good spray of OFF offers Val a bit of protection. Still, he's a veritable feast for the mosquitoes. They come out in droves especially after a summer rain, make it hard for him to weed his garden or mow the lawn without being eaten alive. He's heard all kinda stories about how they carry diseases. While back, he might have worried over that. He's more pragmatic now.
No need to worry. Odds are against him contracting West Nile from a tiny mosquito bite.
It's so much more likely that vampires gonna be the bloodsuckers that lead to his demise.
31. Shade (5 of 100)vavarnerJune 4 2011, 22:15:19 UTC
Sunglasses hide Valentine's eyes, let him smile bright when inside he's wishing he was anywhere but here. The girls clamor all around him. There's nowhere safe, nowhere to hide but behind the shades. It's part of his contract that he does these events. That he's affable, approachable to everyone. No matter how close they get.
He shakes a hundred strange hands, signs everything he's asked to. Poses like a prop for countless pictures.
There's a little patch of shade, and when it's over he stands there a while, catches his breath.

At least the sun won't bear down on him.
