24. Nap (7 of 100)vavarnerJune 6 2011, 00:20:28 UTC
Lazy summer day, and Val's lounging on the porch swing sipping a glass of sweet tea. There's shade on the porch and the tea's keeping him nice and cool. Doing some reading too. Summer's a good time to read for pleasure - he doesn't have textbooks or class assignments to read, so he can pick up whatever book strikes his fancy. Today's is The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake. Not a bad book, but ten pages in, words blur. His eyes slip closed. The book falls to the porch.
2. Festival (8 of 100)vavarnerJune 6 2011, 02:15:40 UTC
Val's all kinds of excited for the Satchmo Summer Fest happening toward the end of summer. This year it'll be early enough in August that he'll still be in New Orleans for it. He'll attend every one of the seminars, go to Jazz Mass (if he's up early enough), and take Mister Ellis to the swing dance at the Stage Door Canteen come nightfall. There's a dinner event too, with red beans and rice and birthday cake where everyone sings happy birthday to Louis Armstrong. It's gonna be great! Val can't wait.

Emery passed the whispering men in white summer suits and straw hats and ignored them looking at her and Beau. They couldn't be sure, she knew, but every time they passed a gaggle of good ol' boys her blood ran colder. Would this time be trouble? The whispering reached a crescendo . One of the men called. “Ma'm?” Emery turned. “You be sure to read them signs and examine the length of that there swimsuit. Today we'll let it slide, but rules are rules.” She let out a breath “Oh. Yes sir. Of course. I will look.” One could not be breaking rules.
16. Umbrella (10 of 100)vavarnerJune 11 2011, 22:13:41 UTC
It's a second line umbrella in green, purple, and gold. There's sparkles and spangles and fringe. A fleur de lis handle, a mardi gras clown point. In any other city, it would be gaudy. Here it's exquisite. It catches Valentine's eye at the craft fair. He brings it home to Elllis.
There he opens and twirls it for the vampire. "Yours," he says. The sequins catch the light, sparkle like jewels. "It reminds me of you."
Ellis too wouldn't be at home in any other city.
The glitzy charm of New Orleans shines through him as well as the umbrella.

Summer naps are good too.
His dreams, like the cake, are bittersweet.

No one throws a festival like New Orleans.
