Who: Danny Fenton and anyone
What: Christmas shopping.  Very, very secretly.
Where: The Plaza
When: Now

Danny warily makes his way through the shops around the plaza.  He really didn't want to run into anyone he knew.

He hated Christmas.  That hadn't changed.  But Sam liked it.  And so did a lot of the other people here.  And if there was one thing he ( Read more... )

Ran was, for the first time since had arrived here, wandering the city on her own. Her father, Conan, and herself had all finally settled on a house in the Ordo Neighborhood due to its complete furnishings and close proximity to the library.

One thing the house was lacking, though, were holiday decorations.

Now, in Japan, Christmas was typically considered a 'dating' holiday - at least to adults and teenagers. But Ran's father Kogoro couldn't give a single care about the day, and Conan was just a kid. So naturally the only option was to get a Christmas tree and "prepare the house for Santa."

...even though Conan was a spoil-sport who didn't believe in Santa, but that's beside the point.

Ran was skeptical that she'd find everything she needed in one go, but she had to at least get started. It seemed that she wasn't the only one with that idea.

Oh! So there were other kids here! That's a relief! Ran smiled at the boy who was weaving through the aisles in the latest shop she had stopped into. "Looking for Christmas presents ( ... )

"That could definitely work!" Sounds expensive, though. Ran shrugged it off. Maybe they were 'those' kind of friends. The thought of which caused Ran to drift off to wonder what Shinichi was doing. Was she going to be able to deliver a Christmas present to him this year? There probably wasn't any means by which to get it out of this place, though...

Ran looked down-cast for a moment, but snapped out of it when she heard Conan's name. "Eh? Oh!" Ran nervously smiled. "He's a little boy my dad and I take care of. A family friend."

If everything was free here, why not take advantage of it?

Danny looks upset for a moment. "They're dragging kids into this now?"

'Kids'? Just how old was this boy, exactly?

Ran wasn't going to make a point of it though. Instead, she nodded and folded her arms. "He's a first-grader."

Danny considered everyone younger than him a kid. He makes a face at the news.

"he might be the youngest one here."

"You think so?" Ran looked at the boy curiously, but with a trace of concern.

"This place seems pretty safe though. Am I wrong?"

Danny makes an annoyed face. "The first week after I arrived this place got attacked by a kraken. Came right through the barrier and we had to fight the thing off."

Ran hasn't heard of this before. "A 'kraken'?" It didn't sound pleasant though. "'Barrier'?"

"Ridiculously large squid. Octopus. Something like that." Danny was annoyed just remembering that. Seriously, nearly a year of fighting ghosts and he hadn't even been able to take out a single tentacle by himself. "Oh, that's the thing that keeps the water out."

"So did the city get flooded when the squid-thing broke through?" They were going off-topic pretty easily, weren't they?

"Nah, nothing got flooded. Not badly, anyway. The tentacles went right through the barrier without breaking it." Since when had Danny ever stayed on topic?

"But..." Ran's brow furrowed in confusion. The barrier isn't...made of glass?" Somewhere in Ran's comprehension of this place she likened Vatheon to a giant fish tank.

Danny shrugs. "Looks like some kind of force field to me. Apart from the lack of glowing it reminds me a lot of the ghost shields back home."

G-ghost shields?! [Ran quickly bristles.] This place isn't haunted, is it?!

There's a few ghosts around. Not nearly as many as back home. Why?

"I just..." Ran looks around nervously. "I really, really hate ghosts!"

She continues to rub her arms, going deeper into the shop. Perhaps the more people there are around, the less likely one would be to show up. "So I'd just like to know if I should avoid anywhere in particular..."
