[ to be honest, he likes birthdays. he would even celebrate one if there wasn't one had to be celebrated! call it an unbirthday, if you will. either way, there's cake to be had, and that's good enough for him.

too much of it? NGL PROBABLY NOT FOR LONG WITH THIS GUY AROUND - in fact if you've been watching you'll notice he's already eaten about twelve of those cupcakes, and is currently licking the icing of the last off his fingers.

it's probably a good thing that the cake's missing right now, so he can't get into it. he's not very happy about that fact himself, and has ceded himself to simply waiting here for it-

-waiting by sitting on the table and continuously treating himself to anything containing sugar in sight. ]

[Well.

Well. At the very least, she doesn't have to worry about wasting any food. Yukari's just...gonna stare for a bit at this guy while he stuffs his face. She's fairly certain she's never met him before, or even seen him around for that matter...but either way, she doesn't want to be rude.

So when she catches herself staring, she grabs one of the few remaining cupcakes for herself, sparing him only the casual, occasional glance.

What should she even say...?]

[ not even really paying attention to her, absorbed in his own eating - or is he? he's actually much more aware of her than he lets on, even if he doesn't so much as glance in her direction-

-until she takes a cupcake anyway. then he suddenly acknowledges her, leaning over to exhibit a heavily frosted cupcake from seemingly out of nowhere to her. ]

The vanilla ones are better, you know.

[ in a motion of what seemed to be an offer to her, he just as quickly retracts his hand and pops the entire cupcake in his mouth, paper and all.

god this stuff is good. ]

[--she's more bothered by the fact that he didn't even bother to take off the paper before eating it, rather than the retraction. It was rather irritating, but she was a bit weary of taking it from him anyway; and she begins to unwrap the paper on her own dark brown-colored cupcake, looking totally unbothered.

Hmpth!]

Maybe I just prefer the chocolate. Is that a problem?

[ IT'S OKAY, he didn't really eat the paper anyway, in fact he's removing it from his mouth right now- ]

Not at all! I was simply making a suggestion.

[ which he totally contradicts because he's picking up a chocolate one himself now - yeah, so long as it has sugar it's fair game. ]

Well, thanks for your opinion.

[But next time, she'll ask for it. She notices him taking that chocolate one, too, so the contradicting is making her want to roll her eyes even more. She will just take a bit into her own chocolate cupcake though--

And when she gets a moment:]

Who are you, anyway?

[ he takes off the paper this time as he answers- ]

Nobody significant, really. Which leads me to wonder why I was even invited to such an occassion - but then again it's most likely a mass invitation, wouldn't you say? Is the birthday recipient a very open sort of person, I wonder?

[ a lot of people are like that - not that he has any qualms concerning that because hey, free cake, and open people are so much easier to read. it's too bad the best information is usually acquired from less than open books... admittedly a challenge is enjoyable, though, and he's and he pretty prideful over his abilities. and now he pops the chocolate one into his mouth whole, this time without the wrapping at least! ]

What about you? Somebody significant-?

[Oh.

Haha, well then. Not everyone knows who the birthday girl is, huh? Good job on introducing yourself there, Yukari. Though to be fair, he really doesn't seem like the type she should be opening up to. In fact, she's not usually that open of a person at all...she wanted this to be an opportunity to change that.

So that they can all celebrate the 'defeat' of the kraken together.

But if he's going to be cryptic about it all...]

Maybe. Everyone's significant to someone, wouldn't you say?

Quite. In the same way that everyone is useful to someone. One should be careful not to confuse the value of usefulness with the value of affection, however! You seem to be believing of the latter, so I must ask-

[ he pauses, then leans back entirely against the table, tossing a foot up before continuing- ]

-whom is significant to you, and whom are you useful to? I wouldn't be surprised were it the same person...

...

[She considers his question for a moment. But a moment is all she needs to decide she doesn't really like his tone.]

I don't know if I'd use the term 'useful,' when referring to friends. That is what they're called, you know; and you can have more than one.

[There's also 'family,' which might be a more a more accurate description, in her case. She's beginning to wonder if he even knows there are words for these things.]

I see. [ there's a lengthy pause, as though he has no other comment on the matter - and he really doesn't. he picks up yet another cupcake from the table where he's lying, beginning to unwrap it- ]

Let us humor for a moment that this is, in fact, your birthday, shall we? An "unbirthday", or so to speak. Do you have a wish-?

[At the lengthy pause, Yukari wonders if she's gotten the last word on that matter. Heh--she must have, which is a good thing, though he does speak up again.

This doesn't surprise her.]

So you figured it out, huh?

[Well, no good reason to hide it, really. Speaking in hypotheticals would get old. She should be happy it's her birthday. Not that this is really any of his business, but...]

I dunno. I guess I never really thought about it...

[Or, more accurately...she's had many wishes, and never bothered to narrow it down...]

[ to be honest, he hadn't guessed that at all! but how convenient this was, her revealing information to him that he had been wondering about - and without too much effort on his part, either.

she really was an open person - but not in the general sense. she probably wouldn't tell you things straight out, and might even try to hide details, but her emotions were very open. you can see right through her.

thus, he was both correct and incorrect in his speculation of the birthday recipient being an open sort of person. ]

Miss Yukari Takeba- [ and he sits up with no cue beforehand that he was going to-

-with a smile he pulls a piece of candy from his pocket, then taking her hand, places it within the palm of that hand. ] -Happy Birthday.

[ with a wave and that wideset smile still on his face, he proceeds to hop off the table, ducking beneath it and its covers directly afterwards.

farewell! ]

[W-Wait.

What? Yukari is a little shaken when he uses her name, but not that shaken, she supposes--since she sent the invitation and all with her name attached.]

Wh-What are you--

[The piece of candy really throws her off though. Her hand shakes and she has to try not to pull it away instinctively or--just hit him.]

He...Hey!

She...mostly succeeds, though when he slips under the table, she's a little too weirded out to ignore it.

She pulls the covers back open immediately and--]
