[Cynthia is returning from her regular training, and is surprised to see a newcomer simply sitting calmly. But rather than rudely stare or ignore him, she wanders over.]

I suppose I should welcome you? If no one else has, I suppose.

[She hands him an empty one, instead. Juuust in case.]

It's called a pokeball. We carry our pokemon with us because we travel great distances to train them.

[He turns it over and over in his hands, looking mildly interested but in honesty picking it apart piece by piece in his mind.]

Train for what purpose?

To battle, of course. Each new trainer is given a pokemon to be their trusted partner, and they begin their journey. The trainer's pokemon can battle wild ones, which is safer for all parties involved. Trainers can also battle each other for sport.

According to league rules, no trainer can carry more than six pokemon at one time, and each pokemon may know only four different attack moves.

A rather elaborate sport. [Sounds like the cockfighting rings in Grand Chokmah's underbelly.] You almost make it sound like they're weapons.

[Which is making him a bit curious to see the beast in action.]

It's shallow to limit them to simply being "weapons". They're our friends, our guardians, and our fellow soldiers.

Quite the multitaskers.

[As interesting as this was, and as intent and intelligently the snake was staring back at him, something else she had said was a bit more interesting.]

You said you had come across underwater cities in your research before.

Think of it this way; we built our culture around their involvement with our lives.

Only in mythology. Domains of "legendary" pokemon, or cities sunk by them. The sea is still a very mysterious place to us.

They must be quite useful if they are that integral. [His eyes return to the snake.] What sort of abilities does it have?

They are! They're very helpful.

Milotic here is a water type pokemon, which gives her advantages when using water-based attacks and gives her defensive resistences against fire, ice, and steel types. She does have weaknesses against grass and electric types, but she in particular has a very sturdy defense that makes her hard to take down.

There are many different types then?

[If he understood the implication of her words, then he'd be quite interested dissecting it and well aware that he'd never get the opportunity to study hers.]
