Saga of a star world and The lost planet of the gods

A couple of weeks ago I borrowed my brothers TOS dvd box. I was quite curious to see it now I've seen the reimagined series. And now I've finally recovered the remote of the dvd player, this was the time. I remember seeing the series when I was a child, so that makes it kind of nostalgic to rewatch. I just finished seeing the first two episodes, ( Read more... )

No one had call signs in the original, that was just their names. Also Baltar was promised that his own colony would be spared and he'd be set up as ruler of it. So he did it for power, after that I think he just sided with them to stay alive, and well because they gave him a basestar ( ... )

Apollo makes some sense to me, since he has a sister called Athena, I can go with that, but who would name a kid Starbuck? I thought it had to do with his love for gambling.

And Baltar being promised his own colony makes so much more sense. I somehow missed that. I was really wondering why one would want to be the only human left, it seemed lonely to me and makes no sense.

I'll check your rewatch as soon as I get passed the iceplanet episode. I think I saw the entire series, but I don't remember a lot of specifics.

Though I have to warn you, lame cowboys are coming! That is something I do remember! What's strange is that there are so many asteroids and planets habited by humans that everyone seems to have forgotten about. That alway's puzzles me ( ... )

The names all seemed nuts to me! I blame it on being the 70s! But Starbuck was an orphan, so whether he was named that by his parents, or later once he'd developed his "skills" I can't really say ( ... )

Yeah, apparently they told him his own colony was to be spared.

Did they say which colony he was from? I'm now assuming he's not a Caprican like 'our' Gaius.

To be fair they did that in the new show too, with Starbuck and Apollo doing lots more than just simply being pilots, security etc.Yeah, it always struck me as a bit strange that they had to go to the Astral Queen and Cloud Nine to help out. And later with the Gideon incident Tigh gets criticized for sending pilots on a croud control mission, while Adama send pilots off to do a lot of other stuff as well. Poor Saul, it's so unfair that in his case it didn't work out - lol. I do think it works well that they seperated the military leader and spiritual leader, although it's interesting to see how those two roles kan conflict if they're incorporated in one person ( ... )

I saw the original movie because I was a fan of Jane Seymour. Therefore I actually watched this pilot and saw her die...That was sad. Ultimately the movie did give a spark because when I saw the reimagined miniseries I was just as gripped by the whole concept. I'm just so glad that things have gotten more nuanced since then! What a difference 20 years can make! Still, perhaps I should rewatch the movie and try to find some TOS eps...see how much I'll cringe :-P

You'll cringe allright!

It's quite charming to watch once you get used to the seventies style, everyone seems to have fun fighting the cylons, and Adama and Starbuck even wear capes on occasion. But of course some of it is really dated, the pacing takes a bit getting used to, but it's not bad at all.

I read somewhere that Serina was killed off in the pilot at first, but the test audience thought that was to depressing. That's why she also appeared in the next episode, only to be shot in the back. Which is just as bad if you ask me.

I have to admit that I never even knew of the original before I watched my first BSG episode.
Yeah, shocking... I know.
So, this was really interesting to read! There seem to be quite a few differences between now and then...

Also, yay for recovering the remote! :-)

Really? You didn't know it existed? I was quite young when they aired it, but I do remember it making an impact. Now when I rewatch it, I notice all these differences. And the seventies style really stands out. For example the pic I posted, I never ever saw one of the men dressed in only a 'pressure suit', why is that? Maybe I don't need to see that anyway...

Also, yay for recovering the remote! :-)

Definitly a big yay! I already gave up on the damn thing! Thought it dissapeared in a trashcan or something, or I would recover it while I was moving eight years or so from now - lol.

I really had no idea, tbh. Yes, I fail that much...
It's probably because we didn't have a TV until I was twelve or something... and I didn't really start watching tv series until later.
But now I know for sure that it actually aired in Germany.
What would you say - is it worth to hunt down a copy or will I be totally confused by the low-techness of it all from todays viewpoint? Because I do get easily confused. ;-)

Wow, you didn't have a tv till you were twelve? Well we did, but I think we only that two channels on it - lol. I don't think you've missed that much considering.

I think you should hunt down a copy if you have time for it. It has those snazzy '70 special effects, think Star Wars, if you can handle that, you can handle this, it's not that bad. It's just fun to see where the inspiration for the bsg we all love came from. You'll recognize a lot of things, and you get to see Starbuck wearing a cape...
