We all know vanilla. It is a dominating scent in a large number of perfumes (e.g. Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium and  Dolce&Gabbana Light Blue). My research area is chemical oceanography, with the focus on the organic matter. Dissolved organic matter in the ocean represents one of the largest reservoirs of organic carbon on Earth, with great implications to climate dynamics. Despite the research efforts, the bulk majority of the organic molecules in this pool remains uncharacterized.
