Sid vs. Dr. Hall: I can't Decide

I think that, if, when he first introduced himself to us last semester in social psych, I had heard him say that he prefers to be called Sid, then I would have started out that way from the beginning, and this wouldn't be an issue. But, I didn't. And so, out of respect for him, I called him Dr. Hall ( Read more... )

Well, you're not going to call him Dr. Hall forever. So go ahead and make the switch as soon as possible. Just causally drop the name Sid while you're talking to him and if he gives you a funny look ask "You did say that was what you preferred to be called, right?" And he'll nod and the awkwardness will be over. Now he is Sid.

I say DAH-tuh because I don't like saying DAY-tum.

It can be hard. Some of my undergrad professors wanted to be called Dr. ____ and some were fine with their first name, so it isn't easy to switch back and forth. Try practicing it over and over out loud so it doesn't even sound weird. When you get to grad school you will call your professors by their first name.
