It may be a mess, but at least it's my mess. And the obnoxious neighbors are at least over there, and not in the living room bellowing. No, he isn't hard of hearing, he's just a bully. And he never shuts up. Mb says he's lonely, but when he has the TV on, why can't he watch the freaking TV and let me read quietly on the couch

There's nothing like the comfort and familiarity of one's own home- even if it's a small shed...it's something that is important. I can understand more and more why the elderly become despondent when taken from their familiar surroundings and dumped into a nursing home.
I'll jump into the Indian River before that happens!
My grandmother will be 93 next month and says she wants to stay in her own home until her time is up--I don't blame her.

I don't blame her! I hope your grandmother has that option. Ahab has mild dementia, which is only going to get worse, a whole cluster of medical issues, and he can't be unsupervised. His ability to stay home is contingent on how willing caregivers are to put up with his nasty personality.

Yes, Ahab sounds like an entirely different situation from my grandmother. She still works in her yard and drives to the beauty shop every Friday. She's one of the last of the true Southern Belles! ha ha
I hope your friend is able to find a place for him if he can no longer live at home. It's nice of you to help her out the way you have.
