Pelee pretties

On Thursday afternoon I met Sylvie for a weekend of birding at Point Pelee, using Dad's place as a base.

Friday at noon we caught the MV Jiimaan ferry for Pelee Island (the photo shows Sylvie on deck nearing arrival). It was my first visit, though I grew up practically within sight of it. What a revelation! It had the lush, flat landscape of Lake ( Read more... )

That moth is just about the coolest thing I've seen. Look at those perfect stained-glass window wings! Nature's infinite variety. I had no idea such a thing existed. Thanks for this, more than you know.

You're welcome. It was the first time I had seen one of these, too.

What a fine trip, even though the number of species wasn't quite as big as other years. Pelee is a magical place.

Magical it is! It's an annual pilgrimage I hate to miss.

Wow, nature has done it again. It fools you into believing its a bumblebee (a.k.a. Stay away, I'll sting you) but in reality, it's a gentle creature.

Stunning...simply stunning.

Thanks!

Yes, I love all these ambiguous insects, but this one is particularly exquisite!

I showed it to Kara, she thought it was a bumblebee but I told her no. She thought it was cool.

Again, thank you for sharing. I love your journal!

I'm so glad you did this! Dana and I were just talking about Point Pelee this weekend, and how we really should plan a trip for the spring migration one of these years (like you, since family is nearby I'm always going to the area in the summer and at Christmas time, never specifically for the birding).

And, what a lovely and interesting moth, I'm impressed that you noticed it and glad for the vicarious glimpse.

We should meet at Point Pelee sometime!

Actually Sylvie noticed the moth. I have wide knowledge of natural history and a photographer's eye. Unfortunately I tend to see the big picture and am not so good at noticing small, remarkable details. Fortunately I have people in my life who are good at it: Sylvie, Danny and especially my daughters.
