It sounds to me like you are waiting for him to break up with you, and it sounds like he is afraid that you are about to break up with him. You can't wait for him to break up with you. I don't think it's that crazy that you told him to not come, but why did you guys leave at different times? I'm surprised you didn't fly out together.
I don't think you can expect him to give you attention and affection, when he is hurt from not going on the trip, and he can probably feel that you're going to break up with him. You either need to do it, or reaffirm for him your love for him.
