There is the most annoying protest/rally thing going on in the MU right now. I'm in Griffin lounge, having just finished the most wonderful lunch EVER (the $2.25 chicken salad on wheat bagel sammich... OMG YUM) and they're driving me crazy. They're chanting something that sounds like, I kid you not ( Read more... )

classes, random, bored, annoyed

I think the very fact that you're posting about the protest (even if its about being annoyed at it) at least shows its working. I'm sure a protest done in English will catch much less attention, because it'll be harder to differentiate (at least from afar) about what the protest is about.

true dat. (and I'm the 2nd-generation child of Serbian and Italian (LEGAL) immigrants, so people can't bitch about me not knowing the whole immigrant thing)

oh yeah, and the "yah" at the end was probably "ya" meaning now or already.

Dude, what do you expect? SCU has only about 8,500 students all told, and a TINY music department. There's about 125 people involved with it at any given time, and only about fifteen of them are performance-worthy to the level that people seek them out. Of those, three (myself, Bobby and Maria) have already graduated, and ALL BUT TWO (Angela, Russell) ARE graduating in June. (Of course, there's a whole crop of new people coming in, like Skye Wilsom and Laura Cowan, but they haven't found their stride yet.) So, yes. We can barely sustain a Starfire-style drop-in liturgical choir, a formal Concert Choir, Chamber Singers and an Orchestra; we already lost the gospel choir and my acapella group, and God only knows what will happen to the Irish Instrumentalist group once every single member of it graduates. Of COURSE there's no Marching Band. =P

But you guys were in Bend it like Beckham, and so was Johnathon Rhys Meyers, who is hot...

...so, by association, SCU is hot.

Yeah, but you know I don't think we can get annoyed at foreigners who can't speak English. After all, when Americans go abroad, most of the time, we don't learn the language and then act all offended when peope can't understand us. Because we are elitist and we expect everyone to be able to speak English. Which is sad, because in more developed parts of the world, people are required to learn the language...which furthers the whole high and mighty view that we have. *boo hoo* q___q

I learned Spanish and I've never been to a Spanish speaking country...if I went somewhere there they'd probably be floored at the fact that I actually took the time to learn the language. I showed them the courtesy to do so...they should as well. Then again, languages do come to me pretty easily...

I don't get that whole offended-if-they-don't-speak-English thing. I never expect people to speak English when I go into a different country (well, except England and Canada), so it doesn't bother me if they don't. English isn't the national language, and I'm not living/working there, so it doesn't matter.
