Her hands are cold, chilled and slick from the flute of champagne abandoned on the kitchen countertop -- pale gold bubbling and muted in a sea of beer bottles, half-empty glasses sticky with old liquor and melted ice -- as they find their way past the cheery red cashmere of Juliet's sweater, wedding band almost catching on one button, curve themselves around her waist, fingertips imprinting her flesh.
Shadows stretch across the thick, crusted snow outside; it's ready to storm again, Charlotte guesses, a moment of distraction from Juliet's return embrace -- familiar but fleeting -- pressed back against corner cabinets, hidden and in secret, like always, away from the bright tinsel and scent of evergreen and happy, idle chatter of party guests nearby. Voices -- Daniel's bright laugh (she still loves the sound), mingled with Jack's low tone, rumbling and light; Juliet pauses, a flicker of guilt and something else crossing her brow -- float, waft, from the living room, almost lost in the noise and tinny Christmas tunes creaking from an old record.
Juliet's breath is hot against her mouth, sour with the alcohol; blonde hair brushes her lashes, skin meeting.
Her words are a whisper --
