Of course he almost loses the ring.
Fingers finally meet metal, tucked deep in his pocket's folds, and he's already sweating; the question comes out stuttered, stumbled, almost gone in the howling storm (New England weather isn't on his side) before silence -- Charlotte laughs, then cries, hand pressed against open mouth; yes.
Brushes at the snow wetting his hair -- you know what my mum would say about me marrying an American, she teases -- and the words run through him colder than any wind but then she smiles, hugs him tight, and he'll worry about it later.
(They have all the later they need, after all.)
