So, I voted yesterday. Afterwards, I had to pick my nephew up from school, and he & I had a conversation about democracy and the importance of voting. Well, we did for about 5 minutes before I could tell he was completely bored. I asked, "You don't really care, do you?" He replied, "Not really." And I told him that I'd stop talking about it, but he ( Read more... )

I liked the post! Maybe your nephew will be more compelled when it's something he is able to participate in. I have to tell you, I am GEEKING OUT about the whole thing. This will be the first presidential election I've even been able to vote in!

That's so cool! I'd be geeked out too! Are you waiting until election day to vote, or are you going to do it early?

I was going to suggest you wait, because it's your first time. It's very unlike losing your virginity, but it's still special. You have to do the whole waiting in line thing. You'll be all excited, other people will be all bored, it'll be great!

I'm kinda with P on early voting. Feels like opening your presents on Christmas Eve.

But good on you for voting, you damnable cityfied unAmerican saboteur.

Now, see, when you call me an unAmerican saboteur, that's infinitely cooler than when the Maverickette does it. Maybe it's the 'saboteur' part.

Voting early IS like opening your presents early. I'm going to have to babysit my nephew on actual Election Day, because he doesn't have school for some reason. I'll have my sister's car because of that, so I was thinking of seeing if anyone else needed a ride to the polls or anything, because, yeah, my ACTUAL part is over, now I'm just trying to still be able to participate in Christmas.

Huh, that's odd that he's off school. I know State offices are closed that day (yay four day weekend), but I don't remember ever getting the day off school, myself. Wonder if his school is a polling place?

And look at you, offering to drive people to the polls! You damn Chicagoans, with your insufferable community organizing. THAT'S SO GODDAM UNAMERICAN IT MAKES ME WANT TO SPIT.

I think it's the 'saboteur' part. Because it Frenches the whole thing up, and as we all know, French=unAmerican, socialist and possibly sexually deviant.

I think his school is a polling place. That's the only reason I can think of, 'cause back in my day we didn't get Election Day off, twelve miles to school in the snow, uphill both ways, etc.

I didn't realize that I'd lapsed into community organizing. It's like a sickness with us. I think it started when I was gathering my clothes to donate to charity and then I offered to help my sister sort through her excess clothing... charitable donations could well be a gateway organization.

"unAmerican, socialist and possibly sexually deviant" - well, it doesn't SOUND wrong, although the socialist part may be overstating the case.

I agree with your pollyanna-like enthusiasm for democracy, of course, I'm more into politics than most of my peers. Strangely enough, I haven't done early voting here (though I've done some campaign volunteer work), and I even live in a swing state!
