Urrrgh, sick. Please send thoughts of chicken soup. Gleh.

Am listening to an audiobook of Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton in the car these days. Just heard that The Guy The Heroine Ought To Be Interested In But Isn't has been fending off the attentions of another young lady... Molly Gibson. Whose father is a Manchester shopkeeper ( Read more... )

*OH -chicken soup- OMMMM*
Hope that helped, I've never sent chicken soup thoughts before.

Two Molly Gibsons? That is odd. If the father was said to be a doctor instead of shopkeeper, then I would say, our sweet Molly was leading a double life. It must be Cynthia's influence. Does Roger know about this?! Agatha Christie reused names -and even recycled entire plot-lines (short stories became novels).

Now that you mention it, L.M. Montgomery recycled some names as well as plotlines in the same way - short stories (which she probably never expected most of her public would see) being cannibalized for the novels. Mary Barton and Wives and Daughters are both major works though, which makes it odder to me...

Mmm, soup. Thanks :)

And even phrases. Now THAT was weird. Names and plotlines are one thing, but the same phrases . . . ? Not that they weren't very nice phrases, of course!

The one that comes to mind is "one who, looking through pain, sees rapture beyond." But I know there were others.

:( Am sick too. As are several of the monkeys, which does not make for fun all around. Want nothing more than to go to sleep... Must make dinner instead. Thankfully, there's spaghetti and meatballs. If only I could hide by myself for a few days and recover!

V. weird about multiple Molly Gibsons. I once saw a letter someone wrote to dear Abby or whomever, saying that in their early twenties they'd used their favorite human name (Emily) on their dog, and would it be weird now to give the same name to their baby girl?

To which everyone answers YES!

I am sorry to hear that you are sick, too!

Funny story: My friend's mom knew her husband reeeally liked the name Elijah and wanted to name one of his kids that. But she didn't like it so much, so she convinced him to name the dog Elijah, thinking that would put the kibosh on his whole plan. But it didn't, and Elijah is totally the name of my friend's little brother.

I wrote a paper on Mary Barton once. All I remember now is that a blind girl who sings really well gets unblind (yes?), and Mary and her Love (Jem?) decide to go to Canada. And also, working in a factory sucks.

Castle! Off to read.

Oops. Sorry. I didn't read your entry properly and thought you were done. :(

Really very sorry! I hate it when people do that to me! Umm...I'm reading Empire Falls by Richard Russo at the moment if you want to destroy that experience for me...

SO SORRY.
