Ignorance makes me want to puke, it really does. I hate racists, homophobes, anybody who is intolerant of people who aren't as shallow minded as them. In the area I live in most people are white so racism isn't common. But there were a few black kids at my school and they got some terrible abuse. Verbal, but you still shouldn't have to put up with that bullshit even if it is just words

It's shocking enough these things still happen, but what scares me even more is that it can happen on college campuses, places of higher learning like Berkeley, for fuck's sake, places that are generally more liberal and open-minded than the rest of the population. It's horrible that these things happened to you, Tracie. It's horrible they happen to anybody, but racism and sexism are never going to go away. They're ideas that are part of our history and as long as we continue the passing on of ideas, they will exist. I hate to say that, but I think it's true. And I can't tell you how fucking pissed off and upset I get when shit like that happens to me. I always think that the next time it happens, I'll stand up for myself more, but that obviously never happens.

You don't have to stand up for yourself, though, in those situations. The problem is with them, not with you, and their immature and disrespectful behavior doesn't even warrant a response.
