Oh, wait! *has a fridge logic/fridge brilliance moment* That was Gen I. This is Gen V. Maybe Ash is looking up moveset changes? That better be the case, otherwise, I will write him off as hopeless.
I'm not really sure about the details, all I know is that he was battling another trainer or something and she used Koffing.
I really hope that's the case...but given that Ash can't even recognize Team Rocket when they're in "disguise", I wouldn't be too surprised if he just didn't remember what a Koffing was... U_U
