I'm a big fan of Octavia Butler, any of her books are good if you like SF.

I've also read every single one of Lois McMaster Bujold's books since last October, she has a nice long SF series that starts with a book called Cordelia's Honor. The overall theme is parenting which you might dig, the format is pure space opera.

Barbara Hambly also has several great fantasy books (My favorite is The Ladies of Mandrigyn) but her historical mystery series that starts with A Free Man of Color and is set in New Orleans not long after it became American is really wonderful.

And a nonfiction book that I think you might like is Janisse Ray's memoir "Ecology of A Cracker Childhood." It's one of the most beautiful books I've ever read, it's short, and it's about longleaf pine forest ecosystem and the culture of poor southerners in the US with an emphasis on celtic heritage.

Well, if you were local I'd just give you a bunch of paperbacks. Our bookshelf is overflowing again. I just took a sack of romance novels to the thrift store last night.

Try Elizabeth Bear - I've just read Hammered and am reading Scardown and Worldwired - very good stuff.

Ursula LeGuin.

Joan Vinge.

Eleanor Arneson.

Mary Doria Russell.

Elizabeth Cunningham.

(just to name a few . . . )

If you've read it, you might want to re-read before the movie comes out this winter. I've got the books if you need to borrow. Phillip Pullman, the trilogy is called 'His Dark Materials'.

Another books-to-movie coming soon is Susan Cooper's series 'The Dark is Rising'.

I have also been thinking of re-reading A Wrinkle in Time in honor of the author.
