Random, why not?

Paying attention to politics angries up my blood.  Watching The Daily Show and The Colbert Report on hulu.com helps a little bit.  Now that the conventions are over, maybe I'll stop thinking about it for a little while.

I just read this news story.  The gist of it is that one guy is complaining that the local game and wildlife service (of ( Read more... )

Perhaps you have emu-handling experience (I say that in all seriousness), but I find it a little implausible that a giant net is going to slow down an angry emu. They are steel-tough (un-electrified versions), crazy-ass, giant birds. They bite. They kick. They can break bones. They sometimes aim for the eyes (maybe it was just MY eyes they didn't like). I'm not saying an electrified stun is a great idea, but I don't think most animal control agencies are prepared to deal with large, angry moose-birds.

I'm sure they aren't prepared, but a net is the way to go, seriously--a big ol' dogcatchers' net, or a throw net. They actually just hand-grab them at the zoo, when they need to do simple medical stuff for them. Hell, in a pinch you could toss a heavy blanket over it.

Emus are big strong birds, but they aren't velociraptors. They're not as big and strong as say, horses; I don't think a cop would try to taser a horse to subdue it.

Interesting, could it be b/c they're more used to handling? We rescued three emus. There was no way anyone could hand grab them. A net didn't work, either. We're lucky they didn't kill any of us. It was a happy day when they were shipped off to black beauty ranch.

I'm sure that's part of it. Probably it's the difference between handling a feral cat and a pet cat.

I'm rofling hard at cops tasering an emu. Not because I don't feel bad about the emu (I do, they have hilarious mating dances), but because I'm picturing the chase with cops waving tazers and Yakkity Sax blaring in the background...
