The Audubon guide is a good one. Many mushroomers call it the Lincoff guide. There's also the Arora, the Barron, the Fischer, the Bessette, and so on. I like to cross-reference the Lincoff against the Phillips and the Arora, to try to get an accurate ID. The internet is great, too, so long as you use multiple sources, ignore the druggies, and check against a hard copy source just to be sure. FUNGI magazine's facebook page is great.
Thanks for all of this. I gathered very quickly [a couple of months ago when the mushrooms first garnered my attention] that the druggies on the internet were not reliable with their info.
I was young once and did my small share of mushrooms growing in the bovine fecal matter of the Brahman cows found along the levees of the mighty Mississippi River. Interesting times. Not necessarily better nor ones I would want to repeat.
There is so much more to mycology than the limited view of "shrooms" that I had back in the wild days of my reckless youth.
