I finished the very basic outline of the five-book series this morning, so I treated myself to watching that movie about that lion and those kids with the primitive TARDIS. My observation: ( behind a cut because it's semi-spoilerish )
I remember reading somewhere on who to write a story: Start with a sentence describing the beginning, middle and end of your story. Now, take each of these sentences and expand it into three more sentences. Lather, wrinse, wreapeat. Finally, take large rambling story, and edit.
I don't know if it works, but it would seem to be a good way of generating enough skeleton to hang a novel around.
Actually, that's the way I do my basic outlines, more or less. The basic idea comes from Aristotle; he's the one who pointed out that all stories have a beginning, middle and end.

Syd Fields helps hone understanding of this, too.
