Proposition 8 and why I am against it

Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.

Honestly, it is the only proposition I've read in full due to it's brevity. As short as it is, the problem I have with it is great. Seriously, what is the big problem? There is only one argument that seems to be the basis for all this hate and all this discrimination: God Read more... )

I am supporting prop 8, but for totally different reasons. I am an atheist, and quite frankly, I do not care who marries who or what. However, I view the proposition as a step in the right direction because it could lay the foundation of viewing homosexuality both legally and socially unacceptable. My views may be outdated, but I believe the underlining condition to be a mental disorder that should be treated with the proper psychiatric help. If it means supporting an idea that is largely religious in its core, then so be it.

Perhaps for different reasons, but with the same hate that the Bible pushers harness to support prop 8. You call it a mental disorder, they call it sin. Same distorted opinion.

I'm appalled, but not really, because you're still the same Dobrin from high school (which isn't necessarily a bad thing).

...and it is always the utopian view argument. You know, the perfect world may eventually come into existence: a place without fear, hatred, anger or strife. Perhaps one day we will be able to say that we have risen above our differences and are able to coexist peacefully with each other, that we are finally able to altruistically look after each other, that we no longer know the meaning of jealousy. Unfortunately, this is not the world we live in today. It is a much harsher place, one where fear, discrimination, and violence reign supreme. As a result, we need to cling to our guns, religion, and be apprehensive of those that are not like us. We must do so to ensure not only that our beliefs remain intact, but on a much greater scale - ensure our survival. Attempting to implement Utopian ideas in an imperfect world is not only inapplicable but also foolish. Failing to see the dangers around can only result in our own demise.
