Last year I had a pair of writing spiders (Argiope of some sort), one outside the front door and one outside the back. Before she died off for the fall, Back Door Spider left an egg sac. I kept an eye on it and really hoped our weird winter and spring with warm weather and then sudden freezes hadn't killed the spiderlings, and then I was forced ( Read more... )

Those are great photos. I think the one that feels creepy is because only the spider is in focus. I really like the one with the writing.

Is that the same species as an orb weaver? The yellow and black color looks familiar.

"Orb weaver" is just the term for any variety of spider that spins a web that is, basically, circular and supported by radial strings of silk. Except that Argiope aurantia, which is what the adult spider who was hanging around that shrub last summer was, apparently also has the common name "golden orb weaver" (as well as "golden garden spider" and "golden writing spider"), so, yep, the spiderlings are orb-weaving golden orb weavers (probably) (don't you love common names?).

I only ever heard 'em called "writing spiders" before I came to this community. :)
