What works for me is hydrogen peroxide. Lie on one side, squirt some in (or pour, or drop, whatever) and sit there for about 5 minutes. You will feel the bubbles bringing oxygen to the ear and it does help to bubble away at the wax which is water soluble. You can repeat it.

If nothing else, it feels a bit ticklish (I tell myself they are scrubbing bubbles) and when you sit upright again, you let it drain onto a napkin or something and it feels better. Plus, it won't actually do any kind of damage to the sensitive parts.

I use Murine Ear Drops when this happens to me. They're not as fizzy as hydrogen peroxide (I'm oddly ticklish). One time, when I had a eustachian tube infection that these weren't touching, I went to the infirmary after having used Murine and the nurse said "your ears are spotless! I've never seen such clean ears!"

In the meantime, ugh, how annoying. I hope you're able to clear it out and return to the hearing world soon.

Have you ever tried Ear Cones? http://www.earcone.com/ I don't recommend doing this the way the woman in the picture is, without help, but it feels neat and it has no negative effects as far as anyone can tell.

I've had very similar problems including the "sorry I'm deaf today" bits. (by the way, telling people you have a head cold works great if you don't want to say ear wax)

I tend to use the hydrogen peroxide. It's not very expensive and it does work. Although with me it sometimes takes several applications.
