Summary - Ju-ken has just left JOB and You has to deal with the fallout
“Who was that on the phone, Gaku?”
Gackt lifted his head from the cordless house phone that sat in his hands and smiled weakly at You. His lover’s hair was still slightly damp from the shower he’d just taken and Gackt watched as You took a seat next to him.
“It was Ju-ken,” Gackt answered simply.
“Oh?” You asked. “What did he want? He’s not bailed out of the drinking party tonight has he?”
“He’s bailed out of a lot more than that,” Gackt said softly.
You took a closer look at Gackt. His jaw was set tightly and the fingers holding the phone were turning white from the pressure of his grip. You gently prised Gackt’s fingers from the phone and placed it on the table before them before the plastic casing cracked.
“What do you mean?”
Gackt sighed and sank back into the soft leather of the couch beneath him, his eyes fixing on the ceiling. “He’s not doing the arena tour. Ju-ken has decided to tour with VAMPS instead and to leave JOB.”
“Oh, right,” You said and for what felt like hours, that’s all he could say. Ju-ken had become part of the family during his five years with JOB and it took You several moments to accept the words Gackt had just spoken. “That’s a surprise.”
“Is it?” Gackt asked.
“Well, yeah,” You replied. “I knew he’d continue playing for other bands but I always thought he’d put JOB first… He always said we were like family to him and that he enjoyed working with us so much.”
“People say a lot of things, You-kun,” Gackt said sadly, “they don’t always mean them.”
“You think Ju-ken was lying when he said that?” You said with disbelief in his voice.
“No, not lying,” Gackt clarified, “he probably meant it at the time but people change. They move on,” he said before quietly adding, “they always do.”
You shuffled closer to Gackt and slipped his arm around the other man’s shoulders. Gackt resisted, but eventually You was able to pull Gackt against him so that Gackt’s head rested on his shoulder. “What’s this about, Gaku?”
Gackt sighed. “Ju-ken is leaving. Ryu left. Masa left. Even Ren left. Ren. We’ve known him forever and even he couldn’t stay.”
You pressed a little kiss to Gackt’s forehead. This wasn’t like Gackt at all. “What is it you usually say, Gaku? People aren’t leaving, they’re just walking a different path.”
“Yeah… a path away from me.”
“Gaku…”
“It’s okay, You-kun. I’m used to it by now. I almost expect it… it’ll be Junji next. I’m sure Chacha will go eventually, and then…”
“No,” You said, interrupting Gackt with a firmness to his voice that made Gackt’s back stiffen. “Chacha isn’t going anywhere and I’m definitely not leaving.”
“Ju-ken said that too…”
“I’m not Ju-ken,” You stated. “My path walks right alongside yours and always has done.”
“You say that now…”
“I’ll say that forever,” You said. “What’s wrong, Gaku? This doesn’t normally affect you this much.”
Gackt sighed. “Maybe, Ju-ken is just one person too many. I can only watch so many people walk away from me before I start wondering if it’s me that causes them to do so.”
You ran his fingers through Gackt’s hair. “It’s not you, Gaku, it’s the lifestyle, the need to do new things… But never you.”
Gackt closed his eyes. “Maybe, maybe not.”
“Definitely not,” You stated.
“I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by it anymore. Everyone always leaves, eventually.”
“Gaku…”
“You,” Gackt interrupted, “everyone leaves. You will one day too.”
You sat up straight, the sudden motion causing Gackt to sit up also. “No. I’m not everyone, Gaku, I will never leave.”
Gackt smiled. “I almost believe you.”
“Well you should,” You said as he relaxed back into the couch and pulled Gackt down until the singer was lying on the couch, his head in You’s lap. You placed his hand over Gackt’s heart. “I’ve never given you a reason to doubt me, have I?”
“No…”
“And I’ll just have to give you no reason in the future either.”
“I guess I shouldn’t doubt you, should I?”
You smiled. “No, you shouldn’t. You’re more than a work colleague or a friend to me, how can I walk away like the others have?”
“Hmm,” Gackt murmured, his hand coming to rest upon the hand of You’s that lay upon his heart still, “I love you too.”
You laughed gently. “I’m glad to hear that. You need to trust in me a little more.”
“You think I’d know by now that if I only trust in one thing, it should be you.”
“It’s okay, Gaku, you always remember that eventually,” You said with a smile. “I think we should start getting ready for the party.”
“Oh, the party,” Gackt groaned. “I’m going to have to tell Chacha and Junji that Ju-ken is leaving.”
“I can do that…”
“No, no,” Gackt said, “it’ll sound better from me but thanks for offering.”
“Just remember,” You said, pausing to kiss the back of Gackt’s hand, “that I’ll always be here.”
“I will,” Gackt smiled. “As long as you’re here, then I don’t care who leaves.”
