How do you use Userpics?

A friend of mine recently posted that she had some new Userpics. Looking them over, I realized that not one of them was a recognizable picture of her.

I then looked at mine and realized all my Userpics are pictures of me, and most of them are quite recognizable:

Hmm.. I don't think I've ever heard or read any rules, official or un-official about userpics, they are mearly a expression of your whim.

I two main userpics. My default pic at the moment is a fine line drawing of me by Lar DeSouza. The other is me as a sly kangaroo furry drawn by Mel. White. I tend to swap back and forth between these two without rhyme or reason. The third one I use now and then is a picutre of me from about 1977 during my performing days as a mime (HEY, it was the 70's).

I have two odd ones, both scanned from single panels of comic strips. One is from "Non-Sequitor" and has danae screaming out "STUPID PHYSICS". The other is of "Garfield", dressed in tacky mexican drag proclaiming "I Need Salsa, Pronto". Both just strike me as delightfully odd.

The last one is currently the logo from my current favorite show "Heroes" and I reserve it for postings about the show.

Someday, I might break down and pay for an account, for a larger pool of userpics.

I like it when people have photos as userpics... Recognizable ones, that is. (Recently it helped me identify a person (I'd never met, who had friended me) when I met her ftf.) But since I don't have too many photos of me that I like, that's not terribly likely. There is one, from when I was 2 or 3, but... well, I think I'd rather be more ambiguous than that.

I suppose if I ever got a tattoo, I might get a photograph of that to use as a pic.

Nah, I have at least one photo of me as a userpic and I use it all the time. I also have several cartoons of me by various friends (Debbie, Seanan, Christine) and assorted pictures of things I like. It's fun to have bunches of icons to reflect your mood and themes.

Three of my four userpics are photos of me (and one of those four is Sheryl and me together). The remaining one is of our furball and is used exclusively for cat-related threads.

I also like it when people use photos, for the same reason as Margaret--being able to identify people when they either friend you or you stumble across their page. I've had a few people who I only identified through an almost off-handed comment in their otherwise mostly-fan-fic LJ's.
