There was nothing restful about the fitful sleep he'd fallen into. It wasn't so much because of dreams or because of pain; it was fear that kept him from resting completely. He hated to admit it, but there was a deep-rooted fear inside of him that kept him from letting go long enough to actually sleep well. He hurt, yes. He was bruised and cut; the torn flesh at his collar had been dressed and he'd been given enough aspirin to dull the pain. In truth, he probably hadn't needed it that badly. After a year in the Underworld and months in a dimension far worse, he was used to pain.

What he was afraid of was falling back into that place. Nothing seemed right here; there was a sense of disconnect that Castiel couldn't quite right, not without focus. He felt as if he wasn't quite there. Unless he grounded himself, he felt as if he could simply slip away again ( ... )
