When Amita stepped into the classroom after learning by Don what happened, she was worried. She didn’t want to lose her friendship with Charlie.
“Charlie.”
“I have one thing to tell you, Amita, before we begin. You want Don, fine. I was under the impression that something could happen between us but, obviously, I was wrong. But remember something, I’m nice, but not stupid. If he leaves you, don’t come to me, Amita. I don’t patch things up. Do you understand? Whatever could have happened between us, that will never happen. I’m not the second best.” Amita looked at the floor. She’d made a choice; she had to bear the consequences.
“It’s ok, Charlie, and I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. Not now. But you’ll be sorry, later, believe me on that.” Amita didn’t understand, she didn’t want to understand, but prayed that, for once in his life, Charlie Eppes was wrong.
