This time I got to the newt migration site at about the right time; so the result was closer to quits - ie about as many saved (eg by cupping my hand over them as a cyclist approached) as were lost to traffic

Is there any local wildlife charity / agency you could contact about this? There may be other people who'd like to volunteer to help if they knew about it. And the agency might be interested in getting a longer-term fix in place.
I don't know off-hand who might be relevant. Although there are a couple of wildlife charities with whom I've previously had dealings. If these had been great crested newts, the authorities probably wouldn't have been able to build more pathway etc in the first place, let alone cause such widespread destruction to either side. But the ones I saw were smooth newts.
The odd thing is that the big amphibian crossing event in the north of the area was pretty much started by me when I was out there with someone else in their car and I insisted we stop because of all the frogs/toads crossing the road. At that point no-one else had noticed the carnage.
I'll probably be out there again tonight but, because I have to be somewhere else first, I'll be too late back for most of the evening prowlers.
In other news, since uploading a 3rd userpic (the butterpig), I've lost all access to my initial userpic (quizzical frog) in comments - whether creating or editing them. It's not just an Internet Exploder bug either. I've just tried on Firefox too (my normal browser for other stuff) and got the same result. I can't find anyway of navigating through what's, frankly, my minimal list compared with most people's massive userpic libraries. I just get the same three (the latest 2 and the nothing-default) going round and round. I think LiveJournal have broken things with their latest horrible updates.
