I'm laptop-shopping for next year and could use some advice...I'm definitely looking for a PC, but beyond that I'm rather lost. What laptop do you have or wish you had? Are there any special deals that other 2010 kids have spotted? Printer input would be helpful, too ( Read more... )

At classof2010.uchicago.edu, if you log in and go to the discussion board, people are talking about various computers, personal experiences and student discounts under the thread Computers.

I definitely second your question, though.. I'm trying to figure out what kind of laptop to get as well.

I have been checking it, but, alienware controversy aside, I haven't found anything really helpful. (Although the CNET forum is discernably and definitely worse...don't venture there.)

IBM Thinkpads are pretty awesome. My dad works for IBM so I'm kind of biased, but we've never used anything but Thinkpads since laptops were invented, basically, and we've never had any problems. You can browse different Thinkpads here -- there are some nice $200 rebates available for some models, and I was able to get a great "Dads and Grads" deal on a Z60m. I'm not sure if the same deal is still available, but the prices are generally pretty good. Annnnd Thinkpads are awesome!

I love my Macbook. I put in 1 gig of memory and an extra 20 gigs of hard drive space, and it works wonderfully.

you can get a student discount with a macbook, and if you buy one now you get a free ipod nano.

Where can I find out about this student discount? I looked on the mac website, but no luck. I'm probably overlooking it, but do you have a link I could check out?

Thanks!

I have a Gateway Convertible Notebook, which is ideal for college, since it folds up into a tablet pc and you can take notes on it by hand. It's really been the most awesome part of my life for some time now.
