July 20th 2012 was one of those shocking national tragedies we're so used to in America. A crazily well-prepared, heavily armed PhD student stormed a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises, murdering 12 people and wounding 50 more.

I am amazed at why anyone would carry a gun and murder people. Seriously, why?

In that much confusion it is likely that the intervening party would have spent some time face-down and handcuffed at the very best, it's true.

Thanks to the joy of social networking, I've already had my first conversation with a friend-of-a-friend halfway around the world, as she announced that someone who'd just gotten back from the US told her the only reason people here don't shoot is that the other person might be armed too. It's the new Cold War! What chilling animals we Americans are!

I have another flister who was in the military and she said the same thing as you: That between the tear gas, people fleeing, and the asshole's body armor, there's just no way a single concealed carry could bring him down. Foolishness.

I feel bad for the movie and its fans, because now there is this taint, and its not the movie's fault. Shallow observation, I know.

Seems like all the preparation for terrorism in the world won't save us from well-prepared and crazed evil people.
