Interesting -- ha, you had the same preconception as I did, a 'Big Dick Swingin' writer-type that I generally avoided. But this sounds pretty cool. Great work, Swain!

Yeah, my friends have been working on me for awhile to change my mind, just like I try to convince people from our generation that Hemingway is a great writer and not a sexist asshole.

Can't he be both?

Yeah, but I was conditioned in school to think that Hemingway simply had to be tossed from the 'canon' in order to make room for Zora Neale Hurston and others. Also, I found that those who condemned him rarely read him, and totally got him wrong.

Also, I think he's one of the best short story writers of all time.

There's nothing difficult about it at all. It's a page turner and a beach read - nothing "literary" other than great clean writing and a deep intelligence behind a science fiction/alternative history plot.

I love the style.

You remind me that I wanted to read this when it came out a while ago. Of course, I forget about it in the rush of about a million other things and nothing at the same time.

Will have to check this out. I'll add it to the list. :)

Can't go wrong with Peanuts, even if it is a shitty copy.

It's a good fast read. Once you start, you won't be able to start.

*chuckle* I like that you picked the early-era Peanuts style. I like the rounder heads with the thicker lines. Maybe they weren't thicker lines, but it just feels that way, you know?

That book's on my list for sure. I need a fast read like that for my trip - I'm reading a Mark Helprin book that's absolutely gorgeous (Winter's Tale), but it's so not a fast read. It's ended up out on the sun porch and I usually spend Sunday mornings sitting out there reading a chunk at a time.
