Meta Vid Search!

Oct 17, 2012 11:02

So, I'm currently working on this academic paper on meta vids, and I'm almost positive that there are more meta vids out there than the paltry few I know of. So! I'm turning to you, my smart, knowledgeable, and awesome fannish friends in my time of deepest need. Do you know of any meta vids and, if so, would you be willing to share them with me/ ( Read more... )

Here are a few suggestions in the fanlore entry. counteragent also has more SPN meta vids. Then there's On the Prowl and I've done a few fandom-specific ones myself. Idk if you want, here's one.

Oh man, this is great! I would love to see any and all fandom-specific meta vids you've done, if for no other reason than I will get to enjoy watching your vids! :D

In vidding/academia-related news, I'm still planning on sending you that paper I presented that used your vid. It will be in your inbox (either email or your LJ inbox if I can't find an email address for you) very soon!

Thank you so much for the links and ideas!

Eh, I still find pimping my own stuff strange. But a large vidography (that's a word, right?) comes in handy for situations like these. Here's another fandom-specific vid and this one is more meta in the vidder-as-artist sense.

Yay paper! There's an e-mail in my LJ bio that you can send it to. Whee! :D

Apologies in advance if I'm telling you things you already know, but these were the first things that came to mind!

The one we talked about most in my fandom class (I know) was "Us" by Lim. That links to an article about the vid with the vid embedded, and there are some pretty interesting comments at the bottom.

One that's fandom-specific (Doctor Who), and one of my personal all-time favorite vids, is Handlebars by flummery. I love this vid so much because it's a classic example of looking at the source in a completely different way than the vast majority of the audience tends to read it. Before I saw this vid, I felt really alone because I wasn't really a fan of Ten and I couldn't quite put it into words, and then I realized I didn't have to, because there was a vid of all my feelings.

Some other really great fandom-specific meta vids are Women's Work by sisabet and luminosity and Vogue by luminosity. I can probably come up with more if you want them, but I feel like I've probably puked all over your LJ enough for one comment. :P

This is great! I've now (thanks to so many super helpful people!) heard about each of these, though I still haven't seen Handlebars, so I'm definitely going to watch it later tonight! Thanks so much! :D

Hi! I'm editing that fanlore page today to include more vids/links. Good luck with your paper!

My vids can be found here: http://counteragent.livejournal.com/tag/vids_mine

Oh, awesome! I've been spending a lot of time on that fanlore page/following the linky links from that fanlore page. :-)

And moar vids! I think I've seen or been linked to a whole bunch of your vids, but I can now fill in the things I've missed! Thanks! :D

OK, I've edited that page. One thing that I think is interesting/important about what people consider to be "meta" vids is that there are at least two broad categories--vids that are classically meta in the sense that they are about fandom, and vids that just have extra analysis of the source, sometimes tying that analysis to general practices in media culture.

Yeah, absolutely! That's one of the points I bring up (albeit briefly) in my paper: meta seems to mean anywhere from that classical definition to vids that are overt with their analysis to vids that seem aware that they're vids. It's really interesting, though, because of the focus of my paper, I only have time to gesture toward the various definitions and give my own broad, working definition before getting on to my argument.

And the new page looks great! So many shiny new details! :D
