People Hiding Alone at Neurosciences

Nov 18, 2014 11:05

I gave someone my LJ address, saying I was going to post all these pictures there... and then decided the ello photo handling interface was easier to deal with considering. So I give you, People Hiding Alone at Neurosciences. #SfNretreathttps://ello.co/tylik/post/

:)

Well, it's not like we go to conferences to confer or anything like that.

5 days (or more) of non stop conferring. Not to mention partying. With 30,000 other people. Total overload. Meanwhile, you keep getting these awesome ideas for actual work.

Sure, that's why I stopped with the "non-stop" part. I've gotten very selective about which and how many talks, poster sessions, parties, etc I go to at conferences. I got tired of chronic conference fatigue, so I don't view skipping stuff as "blowing it off" so much as "self-preservation".

I like your TIM barrel icon. :)

I see the same thing at most conferences, especially ESA which is a tenth the size but still crowded and busy. And full of ecologists who, while not necessarily introverted, probably wish they were outside.

This past weekend I could have taken an interesting set of marine biology students working on their talks while hiding amongst the coat racks. Usually until you get close you just their boots sticking out. :)

There is definitely something about sitting on hard floors near power outlets that is strongly associated with airports and conferences in my mind. (I tend to like tucked away bits of floors in airports, as it gives psychological if not physical distance from the hordes.)

Yay! glad you made it!

I did collect these from a relatively unoccupied part of the conference in, oh, 30-45 minutes. I had this plan that I was going to get another set Tuesday, but running around and geeking with a former member of the lab downstairs and general cool person and then setting up an impromptu cupcake birthday for a labmate ended up eating the day. (Y'know the really big staircase that everyone sits on? We got him while he was sitting at the bottom of it, and after singing and presenting his cupcake, everyone applauded and wished him a happy birthday. He blushes so very well.)

Hope your conference went well! This blog is kind of in transition - mostly this is becoming personal stuff, and filtered to people I know pretty well, and my more public babbling is moving to ello and diaspora. Though it's all somewhat sporadic.
