At about this time a hitherto unsuccessful fortune-teller living on the other side of the block chanced to glance into her scrying bowl, gave a small scream and, within the hour, had sold her jewellery, various magical accoutrements, most of her clothes and almost all her other possessions that could not be conveniently carried on the fastest horse

OK, yes, I exaggerate a little, but Sir Pterry is just... gah! There are no words to express how fantastic he and everything he has ever written I think is.
And those two first books are not even amongst his better works. "Guard! Guards!", "Witches abroad" or "Good Omens" (not a Discworld book, and written with Neil Gaiman, but amazing all the same) never fail to cheer me up.
So, yeah, I heartily recommend them and I'm available for chatting about them whenever you want!

So glad I'm not the only one here who's intrigued by "Discworld"! :D

OK, inappropriate reaction to your icon aside (though I'm sure Crowley would very much approve), yay for Good Omens! It's a fantastic read, isn't it?
And Discworld is even better! All the books with a significant presence by Death, or the Lancre Witches, or the people of the Unseen University, or Rincewind, or... well, just every book.
The good thing, besides, is that you can read them in any order and choose them along with your other interests... like Shakespeare? You'll howl with "Wyrd Sisters". Love fairy tales? "Witches abroad" is for you. Old Hollywood in "Moving Pictures", old-style detectives in "Guards! Guards!", the Phantom of the Opera in "Maskerade", thrilling whodunnits in "Feet of Clay" and I could go on and on...
You have a good time ahead of you if you intend to go into the Discworld... :)

A few years ago I wrote a summation of the sub-series, and the order in which I thought one should read them, here. There've been a few more books out since then, but it's a good place to start.
PS The "Angua" from my username is a character from the Guards sub-series of Discworld. That's her in my icon -- she's a werewolf. The "Lupin" from my username is, of course, Remus Lupin from the Harry Potter books. What can I say, I have a thing for werewolves.

Thanks for the link, I'll definitely check it out! :D
(Someone mentioned a character called Angua so I figured that's where you got the name from. ;) Nothing wrong with having a thing for werewolves! :D)

Which reminds me, I need to check when the new one's out - even if Ankh-Morpork wizard football doesn't sound like a candidate for my top 5 Discworld favourites, but still - Pratchett is the only author who has consistently managed to make me laugh out loud at least once per book...
