The Liverpool vs Real Madrid matches were horrible enough
I know. I got so excited that two of my favorite teams will play against each other, and at the end I was bitterly disappointed, because I didn't consider the possibility that one team may end up utterly defeated and torn. At least I came out of it with a clear favorite (RM). This time Liverpool might have to play Barca, which..man, idek. I don't want to see either of those teams torn to shreds D:
Yeah, I know what you mean. After the draw for the last 16, I was excited for about 5 minutes and then realised that it was now certain one of my favourite teams wouldn't get through. And that was when it started to get horrible. The matches itself were torture, especially the first one, because I would have wished for that one to end with a 0-0 draw. (Not because I didn't want a clear result but because the way the teams played didn't warrant one.) *sigh*
And on the one hand, I want Bayern to beat Barça and advance, and I want Liverpool to beat Chelsea (obviously), but I don't want yet another clash of two of my favourite teams. Why couldn't Liverpool have been in the other group? :(
and if Utd beat them, they'll play against either Villarreal or Arsenal in the semifinals. Which, no doubt about it, is definitely a LOT more difficult than what the other finalist will have to overcome. Err, am a bit confused here, bb. That sounds contradictory to those bloody Mancs getting an 'easy' draw. Anyway, ugh, if my Gunners advance, we'll be facing the Mancs.
Note to self: do not fall into the CL trap next season.
The "a LOT more difficult" bit was sarcasm - but I do realise now that I might not have made myself clear there. It might just be my very subjective opinion but I do think it's easier to succeed in a group with Porto, Villarreal and Arsenal than it is in that other group.
Note to self: do not fall into the CL trap next season. *sigh* That is so easy to say and so difficult to carry out. *crosses fingers for you*
Exactly! I read in an article yesterday that apparently this CL draw is all about revenge, or at least the chance to have one's revenge, ManU against Porto for 2004 (I think?), Arsenal against Villarreal for 2006, Chelsea against Liverpool for the two league matches this season, and Bayern against Barcelona for... well, just the fact that they lost 2-1 against the Mancs at the Camp Nou in 1999 (which still riles me up). But of course, Porto aren't the same today as they were in 2004, so this tie is more than ridiculous. Ah well, there's still hope that the Mancs will get used to the quality of their opponents and then be completely overtaxed in the final. (A guy can dream, right?)
I'm most frustrated about the Mancs' draw, too. the easiest way to the final Yes, so irritating, every fucking year.
I don't mind Chelsea so much; I think it's a pretty even match-up. While it would have been great to have gotten a 'weaker' team, I think that in Europe, we tend to play our best against the huge teams, and almost lose focus against the smaller ones (e.g. Benfica, Galatasaray, Besiktas). I'm just relieved that we didn't get the Mancs or Barca, although the prospect of facing Barca in the next round (if we manage to beat Chelsea, of course, and if Barca beat Bayern) isn't a hugely attractive one. *sighs*
I'm trying to be positive, though. We've already beaten Chelsea twice this season, and I'm sure we can do it again. And Liverpool is in charge of its own fate. Sure, the other draws are somewhat... shitty, but we can do it. :)
I don't really mind Chelsea as such, either, but I would have liked some diversity. Playing Chelsea in the CL for two consecutive seasons is just boring. Also, I think it's so unfair that Liverpool have the stronger group and ManU are clearly the strongest team within their own group. This imbalance is what annoys me the most. You're right, of course, that we're at our best when we're playing against strong opponents, and as I wrote above, there's always the chance that the Mancs will get used to the quality they've been playing against so far and be completely overtaxed in the final, but I can't focus on that just now, I'm still too annoyed.
(And I'm all the more annoyed because if Bayern beat Barça, which I hope will happen, they'll play against Liverpool. And I'll be damned if I know who I want to win there. *sigh*)

Why does the Football God hate me so much.
I asked myself the very same thing after I saw the draw.
