In phase one they are miserable failures, drugs keep their fragile minds intact while struggling against everything and everyone and it is from this struggle that great art is born. In this phase that art is relevant to their audience which is also generally miserable.
In phase two the band breaks through and goes through a period of elevation and elation and on this path they have the potential to bring some of their audience with them, think of this as the ray of hope in every person's life.
In the third phase the band has already peaked and no longer has any real problems to legitimately complain about. It is all downhill from here.
Enter phase four, the fall that follows the pride. The best artists die rather than live on as industry zombies. Those who maintain some semblance of themselves while operating in this phase were generally pretty fake people to begin with.
