Well, I wasn't joking. I just didn't know any better. What do you know about the helio phones? They look neat, but I don't know anything about 'em. Where would I be able to find an unlocked GSM phone?
The iPhone is going to be $500 or $600 depending on the version you get, plus you're required to sign a 2 year contract with AT&T and will in all likelihood have to have a data plan on your contract as well. Expensive.
Your best bet is probably the Helio thing. I've heard really good things about it.
As far as unlocked GSM phones go, mobilebee.com sells them at reasonable prices, but you need to make sure it's a quad band phone so it'll work well with tmobile. Then you add tzones to your tmobile plan for $6/mo and with a bit of trickery you get unlimited data. Helio is easier.

You could always just buy an unlocked GSM phone and not have to extend your contract or anything.
